A Quick Glance at Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare Advantage Plans (like HMO or PPO) are health plans run by Medicare-approved private insurance companies. Medicare Advantage Plans (also called "Part C") include Part A, Part B, and usually other coverage like Medicare Prescription drug coverage (Part D), sometimes even Dental Insurance, Vision Insurance, and Gym memberships are included for little to no extra cost.

A Quick Glance at Medicare Supplements

Every Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy must follow Federal and state laws designed to protect you, and the policy must be clearly identified as “Medicare Supplement Insurance.” Medicare Supplement (Medigap) insurance companies in most states can only sell you a “standardized” Medicare Supplement policy identified by letters A through N. Each standardized Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policy must offer the same basic benefits, no matter which insurance company sells it. Cost is usually the only difference between Medicare Supplement (Medigap) policies with the same letter sold by different insurance companies.

What do I need to know if I want to buy a Medicare Supplement?

  • You must have Medicare Part A and Part B to buy a Medicare Supplement policy.

  • If you have a Medicare Advantage Plan, you can apply for a Medicare Supplement policy, but make sure you can leave the Medicare Advantage Plan before your Medicare Supplement policy begins.

  • You pay the private insurance company a monthly premium for your Medigap policy in addition to the monthly Part B premium that you pay to Medicare.

  • A Medigap policy only covers one person. If you and your spouse both want Medigap coverage, you each will have to buy separate Medigap policies.

  • You can buy a Medigap policy from any insurance company that’s licensed in your state to sell one.

  • Plans E, H, I, and J are no longer for sale, but you can keep these plans if you already have one.

  • If you want to drop your Medicare Supplement policy, contact Senior Market Supplements and your insurance company to cancel your previous policy.

  • Any standardized Medicare Supplement policy is guaranteed renewable even if you have health problems. This means the insurance company can’t cancel your Medigap policy as long as you pay the premium.
